But no man is an island, and no palace comes without a collection of supporting buildings that look back on their own history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With demand for soldiers, servants and stallions declining since the days of Emperors and Empresses, many such buildings find new purpose: the Orangery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/schonbrunn-classical-concerts\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5608\">plays host to concerts<\/a>, for example, while a riding arena houses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/wagenburg\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"166\">Imperial Carriage Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Kavalierstrakt, which runs along the east side of the forecourt, once prepared food for peckish guardsmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, tourists in need of refreshment can also find culinary relief within the tract thanks to the caf\u00e9-restaurant run by Gerstner K. u. K. Hofzucker\u00adb\u00e4cker. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/k-k\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"12865\">K. u. K. designation<\/a> refers to the former official status as suppliers to the court, an honour awarded back in 1873.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other Gerstner premises in Vienna include those inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/staatsoper\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1071\">State Opera House<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/gerstner-palais-todesco\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"81841\">Palais Todesco<\/a>. The Sch\u00f6nbrunn location is younger, however, having opened in 2024, replacing the former Caf\u00e9 Residenz. Hofzuckerb\u00e4cker)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside, Gerstner looks like a grand traditional coffee house, complete with chandeliers, upholstered sofas with cushions, coffee house chairs, a glass vitrine layered with cakes, and a white rose on each table. Copies of historical paintings of court life and court portraits line the walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having arrived early to take breakfast outside, my companion and I passed through this elegant interior as a tribe of waiting staff laid the tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It felt like a scene that might have played out 150 years ago in anticipation of a visit from the Kaiser or a senior court official. The kind of place, like so many in Vienna, where you might discuss the behaviour of the Prussian ambassador at last night&#8217;s ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The outdoor area has more pragmatic seating beneath a roof canopy with misting facilities to offer shade and protection from summer sun and heat. Breakfast arrived on plates by Villeroy &amp; Boch (founded in 1748), for example. And no packaging, plastic or even jars in sight; the butter and jam had their own dishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I base most of my coffee house trips and articles around breakfast, and little things matter to me. For example, the generous portions of butter and jam with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/breakfast-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"82605\">my Wiener Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck<\/a> meant no need to treat the application of either as an exercise in rationing (as can happen elsewhere).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The croissant was lovely, and the cappuccino had a little G for Gerstner embedded in the foam; it really is about the little touches. The soft-boiled egg did, however, arrive without a spoon. But I put that down to teething problems with a new enterprise. (I shall return later to check.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gerstner offers, of course, a wider menu covering the whole day.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/gerstnercoffee.jpg\" alt=\"A cappuccino\" class=\"wp-image-74318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/gerstnercoffee.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/gerstnercoffee-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Little touches matter: Gerstner sugar and foam art)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The service was a fine multilingual juggling act between traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/coffee-house-experience\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1947\">unhurried coffee house culture<\/a> and tourist needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food and drinks arrived swiftly and my companion&#8217;s order of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/apfelstrudel\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"73061\">apple strudel<\/a> arrived automatically with two forks, which suggests an attentiveness you don&#8217;t always get everywhere in Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ah, yes, strudel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My companion is a connoisseur of such pastries and a cynical caf\u00e9 visitor as well. But the Gerstner strudel received a decisive &#8220;excellent&#8221;: a rarely-bestowed compliment indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/gerstnerstrudel.jpg\" alt=\"Apple strudel\" class=\"wp-image-74320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/gerstnerstrudel.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/gerstnerstrudel-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Gerstner are rightly proud of their apple strudel, which has pride of place in the glass cake vitrine)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The location actually offers ticketed strudel shows downstairs (included in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/vienna-pass-review\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3960\">the Vienna Pass<\/a>, like many of Sch\u00f6nbrunn&#8217;s wider attractions). We didn&#8217;t go, but the scent from the doorway was remarkably enticing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All-in-all the Gerstner establishment matches the wider imperial surrounds perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this elegance comes at a price, of course. Which is\u2026the prices. These inevitably reflect the location and mirror those of the very high-end coffee house establishments in Vienna&#8217;s old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get there<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Find you way to Sch\u00f6nbrunn Palace using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/gettingthere\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"122\">these directions<\/a>. Go through the main entrance and continue across the giant courtyard; head toward the left side of the palace (where the tours start).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You pass Gerstner&#8217;s entrance in the centre of the tract on your left, clearly marked where you have the columned white portal.
