Same stands, more or less; same contents, more or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The market sits between two of the prestigious buildings that popped up during the great period of urban (re)construction that marked the second half of the 19th century in Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps it&#8217;s coincidence but, when I last visited, the stalls nearest the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/natural-history-museum\/\">Naturhistorisches Museum<\/a> (natural history museum) sold food and drink, while those nearest the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/khm\/overview\/\">Kunsthistorisches Museum<\/a> (prestigious art museum) sold creative handicrafts and similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So a deserved flourish of the hat to the planners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, if it all gets too cold for you, both those museums have excellent caf\u00e9s inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"pro1008299,pro1029872\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_NewYearAlt\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The notable differences I found when compared to the Christmas market:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most of the mugs continued with Christmas market themes, but the mug stand also had some featuring New Year symbols<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One or two stands added traditional New Year motifs to their wares, too. Pig-shaped items, in particular, count as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/new-year-traditions\/\">lucky charms<\/a> that the Viennese exchange with friends and family at New Year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/newyearmarketpunchmugs.jpg\" alt=\"New Year market punch mugs\" class=\"wp-image-45862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/newyearmarketpunchmugs.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/newyearmarketpunchmugs-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(An earlier New Year mug in action)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discounts on Christmas stock proved rare, but with exceptions. For example, I found 30% off ceramic plates at one stall<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want cheap Christmas items, visit the city&#8217;s department stores. They usually sell off their seasonal stock after Boxing Day at a steep discount. Though you won&#8217;t get the kind of handcrafted unique items sold at the seasonal markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Punch was, as at every Christmas and New Year market, ubiquitous, and the food included all the seasonal snacks and fare plus the traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/sausages\/\">fried sausages<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/langos\/\">langos<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/roastchestnuts\/\">roast chestnuts<\/a>. And a couple of international dishes added a global flavour to proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/snowglobes.jpg\" alt=\"Festive snow globes\" class=\"wp-image-45863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/snowglobes.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/snowglobes-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Appropriately-themed snow globes)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The arts, crafts and other items left quite an impression on me, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expect the likes of candles and woolly hats, regional schnapps and liquors, wintry decorations made from cinnamon sticks, dried fruits and bay leaves, jewellery, toys, ceramic flowers, and much (much) more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next dates &amp; times<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The market typically follows on without a break from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/christmasmarkets\/weihnachstdorf-maria-theresien-platz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"860\">Christmas market<\/a>. I don&#8217;t have confirmed details for the next event at the time of writing. The square hosted no Christmas or New Year market in 2025 because of planned construction work around the entrances to the museums, and this might also affect the next edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last time out, the market opened until December 31st. Scheduled opening times from the 25th were 11am to 7pm. However, the market closed at 6pm on New Year&#8217;s Eve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get to Maria-Theresien-Platz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The location is positioned quite perfectly for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/public\/\">public transport<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway: the Volkstheater U2\/U3 station or the MuseumsQuartier U2 station<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trams: the market borders the Ring, which hosts a continuous stream of trams.
