the preparations for year-end festivities and the forthcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/sport\/wiener-eistraum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"833\">Ice World extravaganza<\/a> can take away some of the glamour of the otherwise beautiful location in front of the town hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What will you find in the booths?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, let&#8217;s just say many of the arts and crafts brigade seem to prefer to celebrate the New Year at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"pro1008299,pro1029872\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_NewYearAlt\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On my last visit, most of the huts fell into one of three categories, all with the feel of the kind of booths you&#8217;d expect accompanying a funfair and in tune with New Year&#8217;s Eve expectations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food stalls, with mostly fried snacks and perhaps lacking the regional diversity of somewhere like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/christmasmarkets\/schoenbrunn\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"153\">Sch\u00f6nbrunn market<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There was plenty to drink, whether Irish whiskey, sparkling wine or&#8230;punch (in New Year mugs, too, shaped like a mushroom or with a lucky horseshoe design).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One or two stands converted to covered shelters, so you could eat and drink &#8220;inside&#8221; if the weather demanded it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New Year knickknacks: an array of lucky charms with the typical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/new-year-traditions\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6448\">motifs<\/a> of the season, namely pigs, clover, chimney sweeps and similar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Party gear, particularly garish hats and headbands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/newyearrathausplatz.jpg\" alt=\"Cheese stand at a New Year market\" class=\"wp-image-45840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/newyearrathausplatz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/newyearrathausplatz-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A cheese stall in among the party-oriented booths)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A handful of stands sold, for example, cheeses or honey products or decorations, but most were there to ensure you had a fun time long into the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So think of the Christmas market as the refined couple, enjoying a gentle evening stroll with a dash of style and self-assurance (albeit in the company of thousands of others).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And think of the New Year market as the brash and gaudy teenager, with a bigger appetite for food and entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dates and times<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have no details at the time of writing about whether or when the event next takes place. Check locally for the latest news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous market (way back in 2019\/2020, when corona was still just a beer brand) opened from December 29th to January 1st. Times were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>11am to 9.30pm (Dec 29)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>11am to 8pm (Dec 30)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>11am to 2am the following day (Dec 31)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10am to 5pm (Jan 1)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get to the Rathausplatz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to miss if you&#8217;re touring the main sightseeing areas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/walking-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"50322\">on foot<\/a>. The park surrounding the Rathaus square glitters with lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway: Take the U2 line to the Rathaus station, where you emerge at the rear of the town hall<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tram and bus: The trams 1, D and 71 stop at Rathausplatz\/Burgtheater, which is at the entrance to the market. Tram 2 also stops at Parlament, which is just a touch further south.
