With rather a lot of good ones around, it&#8217;s often a matter of taste and personal preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I canvassed opinion among friends and relatives to come up with this list of caf\u00e9s, which will grow as more suggestions come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Book a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/concerts-opera-vienna-tickets-l206741\/?partner=visitingvienna&amp;tq_campaign=LG_Coffee\" rel=\"sponsored\">concert experience<\/a>* for your Vienna trip<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>See also:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/viennese-experiences\/\">Local Viennese experiences<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/coffee-house-experience\/\">Coffee house traditions<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/breakfast-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"82605\">The Viennese breakfast<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, it fell to me to work my way through all the below one-by-one, bravely consuming coffee and mountains of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/vienna-cakes\/\">cake<\/a> to bring you a local review of each establishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not an exhaustive list by any means. And at the end, I offer a few <a href=\"#and-for-something-a-little-different\">alternative suggestions<\/a> for caf\u00e9s that fill a local, different or unusual niche as an alternative to the mainly city centre classics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in no particular order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mce_10\">Caf\u00e9 Central<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/cafecentralchristmas.jpg\" alt=\"Cafe Central at Christmas\" class=\"wp-image-45035\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/cafecentralchristmas.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/cafecentralchristmas-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The coffee house at Christmas)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Easily spotted because of the queues that always seem to snake out from the entrance. Possibly the most famous of the Vienna coffee houses and much loved by tourists (hence the queues). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trotsky and Freud both supped at their drinks in this ground floor location in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/palais-ferstel\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"29688\">Palais Ferstel<\/a>. (In fact, in 1913, they both lived in Vienna at the same time as Tito, Hitler and Stalin, which must have led to some awkward conversations in the supermarket queue.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I went into Caf\u00e9 Central a skeptic and came out a believer; the interior architecture is truly wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herrengasse \/ Strauchgasse, 1010 Vienna | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-central\/\">My full review<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cafe-hawelka\">Caf\u00e9 Hawelka<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"337\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafehawelka.jpg\" alt=\"Cafe Hawelka\" class=\"wp-image-46780\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafehawelka.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafehawelka-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Be sure to try the Buchteln)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A more homely alternative and famously the subject of one of Vienna&#8217;s best-loved songs, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wcbq4D0eVxY\">J\u00f6 Schau<\/a>&#8221; by the late Austrian songwriter Georg Danzer. The chorus includes the line, &#8220;What&#8217;s a naked man doing in Hawelka?&#8221; (Not something you&#8217;re likely to see today.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pop legend, Falco, celebrated his 30th birthday here, and other prominent guests have included Andy Warhol, Klaus Maria Brandauer, and Peter Ustinov. As I wrote in my review, the place is &#8220;as comforting as a pair of well-worn slippers&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the most central of all the locations featured here: around halfway between Stephansdom cathedral and the Hofburg palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dorotheergasse 6, 1010 Vienna | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-hawelka\/\">My full review<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cafe-sacher\">Caf\u00e9 Sacher<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/sacherfront1.jpg\" alt=\"Caf\u00e9 Sacher awning\" class=\"wp-image-41499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/sacherfront1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/sacherfront1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Be sure to try the cake)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another famous one easily spotted from the queue that commonly forms outside. The elegant decor carries echoes of palatial interiors and the view out the front windows looks fittingly 19th century (it&#8217;s opposite the Staatsoper opera house, opened in 1869).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This caf\u00e9 is the natural home of the original Sachertorte cake and it kind of feels wrong to go inside without having a slice (or three). Or at least that was my excuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philharmoniker Str. 4, 1010 Vienna | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-sacher\/\">My full review<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mce_10\">Caf\u00e9 Sperl<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafesperl.jpg\" alt=\"Caf\u00e9 Sperl sign and awning\" class=\"wp-image-46351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafesperl.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafesperl-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Also famous for its TV appearances in <em>Vienna Blood<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opened in 1880 and traditional home to archdukes, generals, artists and actors (the caf\u00e9 is close to the Theater an der Wien opera house). Also known for its billiard tables and beautifully patterned upholstery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a feeling of Edwardian refinement about the place. Definitely one of my favourites&#8230;not least because it also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22811\">appears<\/a> in the Vienna Blood period detective series that features so many gorgeous city locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gumpendorfer Stra\u00dfe 11, 1060 Vienna | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-sperl\/\">My full review<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caf\u00e9 Goldegg<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/cafegoldegg2.jpg\" alt=\"Front of Caf\u00e9 Goldegg\" class=\"wp-image-60426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/cafegoldegg2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/cafegoldegg2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Modern signs with a historical interior)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A jewel away from the centre and with original Jugendstil d\u00e9cor (from 1910).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Popular with locals, Goldegg is close to Upper Belvedere palace. It even has a theatre in the basement, reflecting the long association between coffee houses and the arts. Inside is a mix of Art Nouveau and 1950s &#8220;Mrs Maisel&#8221; design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The caf\u00e9 is a favoured haunt of students from the nearby University of Applied Arts. So you might describe it as rather central. Known particularly for its inter-war interior design and neo-rococo ceilings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most famous guest was probably Austrian author, Peter Rosegger, who came *this* close to winning the Nobel Prize for Literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mariahilfer Stra\u00dfe 73, 1060 Vienna | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-ritter\/\">My full review<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mce_10\">Caf\u00e9 Jelinek<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/cafejelineksigns.jpg\" alt=\"Cafe Jelinek signs\" class=\"wp-image-43773\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/cafejelineksigns.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/cafejelineksigns-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Another location with a particularly local feel)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A coffee house like a worn sofa; comfortable, relaxing and leaders of the counter-revolution against the pristine approach of more museal caf\u00e9s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seemingly oblivious to trends and the passing of time, Caf\u00e9 Jelinek is slightly off the beaten track, so less likely to be full of tourists (just full of Viennese). The interior evokes the early 20th century, while the ambience and service has a contemporary feel. What I describe as &#8220;Vienna in miniature&#8221; in my review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The caf\u00e9 has plenty of good things going for it, but deserves a special mention for a breakfast menu based on notable philosophers. Very popular with locals for card games and chess.
