For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/mozart\/\">Mozart<\/a> first performed in Vienna at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/palais-collalto\/\">Palais Collalto<\/a> at an age when most kids are just saying goodbye to Kindergarten<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The imposing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/kirche-am-hof\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"29356\">Kirche am Hof<\/a> church dates back to the 14th century (the fa\u00e7ade is a mere 350 years old, mind you); three popes have spoken from its balcony<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/marian-column\/\">Mariens\u00e4ule<\/a> column at the centre of the market gives thanks to the Virgin Mary for the Swedish army&#8217;s decision to go around Vienna back in 1645<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/amhofchristmasmarket1901.jpg\" alt=\"1901 painting of Am Hof Christmas market\" class=\"wp-image-61058\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/amhofchristmasmarket1901.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/amhofchristmasmarket1901-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">Painting by Carl Pippich of the Am Hof Christkindlmarkt in 1901; Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 33925; excerpt reproduced under the terms of the <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\">CC BY 4.0 license<\/a>; photo by Birgit and Peter Kainz, Wien Museum)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That military detour proved quite fortunate for the city, because those 17th-century Swedes were armed with more than selfie sticks and bottled water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The square has actually hosted markets for centuries, but the first Christmas one here appeared just as Charles Dickens began work on a tale about a miserly fellow named Scrooge (a story you can see come to life annually in Vienna courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/theaters\/open-house-theatre\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"66138\">Open House Theatre<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s Am Hof Christmas market is ideal for those who like their sights and activities packed together, being close to, for example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/hofburg\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2708\">Hofburg palace complex<\/a> in the city centre and only a short walk from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/christmasmarkets\/freyung\/\">Freyung Christmas market<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"pro1119393,pro1029872\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ChristmasNew\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of the location as made up of two parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first part is the Kunsthandwerkmarkt (arts and crafts market), which usually features around 20 huts selling, well, &#8220;arts and crafts&#8221;. This is not your run-of-the-mill craft market, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike most market stands, you can go into some of these. Hopefully that will return for 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Am Hof also feels as if it offers a wider range of food and drink than at many of the other Viennese markets. You even pass the square on Part 4 of my recommended self-guided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/walking-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"50322\">walking tour route<\/a> of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway: take the U1 (to Stephansplatz), U3 (to Herrengasse) or U2 (to Schottentor).
