For one weekend each year, about 4.5km of it turns into a huge open-air music festival: the Donauinselfest (Danube Island festival)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And entry is free.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/dif2.jpg\" alt=\"2018 Donauinselfest stage view\" class=\"wp-image-45600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/dif2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/dif2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Photo \u00a9 Andreas Jakwerth; reproduced with permission under the terms of the <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/2.0\/\">CC BY-SA 2.0<\/a> license)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can imagine, the word &#8220;free&#8221; next to the words &#8220;music festival&#8221; has a certain attraction to it; the Donauinselfest can pull in over 2.5 million visits across all three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The music typically covers various genres, including rock, pop, rap, hip hop, electronic music, country, swing (yep), folk, metal, and all things in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although most performers ply their trade in Austria, the roll call of international stars from past events makes for impressive reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The likes of The Backstreet Boys, Anastacia,&nbsp;Bonnie Tyler, Mando Diao, Lisa Stansfield, Amy Mcdonald, Michael Bolton, Sean Paul, Bob Geldof, and Ronan Keating have turned up, as well as a who&#8217;s who of the wider German-speaking music worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous event, for example, saw No Angels and Kim Wilde drop by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"exp206741,exp238032\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ConcTour\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>All sorts of other activities and entertainments help keep you occupied between performances, too, not to mention a host of stands to ensure you stay fed and watered (not free, obviously). The last event included, for example, a pop-up design market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get a feeling for a typical festival from the video at the bottom of the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Unusually, a political party organises everything: the left-wing SP\u00d6 has more or less formed the city government for decades.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 2026 Donauinselfest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t have full details yet of the next edition. But to let you know what to expect&#8230;the previous one featured around 200 acts on 16 stages with some 700 hours of programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dates and tickets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A June weekend is traditional, but the 2026 festival takes place from July 3rd to 5th to avoid clashing with the Austrian Grand Prix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t need to buy a ticket because entrance is, as mentioned, free. Look to that <a href=\"https:\/\/donauinselfest.at\/\">official website<\/a> for access and programme details, as well as full visitor info, once available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get to the Donauinselfest<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For the events on the island, don&#8217;t take a car. Jump on the subway to the Donauinsel, Neue Donau or Handelskai stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Donauinsel subway station is on the U1 line that traverses the city centre. Use the U6 line to reach Handelskai or Neue Donau. The trains usually run at very short intervals into the night during the 3-day festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The citywide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/cycling-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"30922\">WienMobil bike rental system<\/a> may also have temporary stations in the area for renting and\/or returning bicycles at any time: at the main entrance to Handelskai and at the Floridsdorfer Br\u00fccke and Reichsbr\u00fccke bridges.
